Practice Permits

Practice Permit Issuance

Regulated members are able to print a practice permit after registration.

The permit must be displayed where the member provides professional services. If services are provided in the field, not in the workplace, the member must carry the permit and provide it for inspection on request.

Each practice permit includes the same information:

  • a statement that it is issued by the Institute pursuant to the Agrology Profession Act,
  • the permit’s expiry date,
  • the member’s full name and registration number,
  • the category of registration, and
  • any conditions imposed on the permit.

Practice permit conditions could include, for example, a requirement for the member to

  • complete any examinations, assessment, or work experience required by the registration committee;
  • practice under the supervision of a regulated member registered on a specified register;
  • not supervise others;
  • limit the member’s practice to specified practice areas or practice settings;
  • report to the registrar on specified matters on specified dates;
  • complete the requirements of the continuing competence program within a specified time;
  • use only specified titles;
  • not affix the member’s practice permit number, signature, or title, abbreviations, or initials to any project reports, compliance reports, plans, maps or other documents used in the practice of agrology.

Practice Permit Renewal

A practice permit renewal application for the next year must be obtained on or before December 31 of the current year. Renewal opens October 1. A regulated member, whose registration is not suspended or cancelled, must submit a complete renewal application that includes

  • the required fee,
  • evidence that the member has completed the continuing competence program credits required,
  • evidence that the applicant is a Canadian citizen or is lawfully entitled to work in Canada,
  • evidence satisfactory to the registrar of having good character and reputation, and
  • a statement about whether the member has been convicted of a criminal offence since the member’s last renewal of a practice permit.

A practice permit may be renewed subject to conditions, suspended, or refused. In those cases, the member has a right to request a review by the AIA council (see Reconsideration Review and Formal Review below).

If a regulated member does not submit a complete practice permit renewal application by December 31, the member’s practice permit is automatically suspended by operation of law. To protect and serve the public interest, the member’s name is published on the Institute’s website. The member must not provide professional services or use protected words, titles, initials, and abbreviations. The registrar may cancel the member’s practice permit in accordance with the Agrology Profession Act.

Fees will apply to reinstate a suspended or cancelled permit.

Automatic Suspension if Practice Permit Not Renewed

If a regulated member does not submit a complete practice permit renewal application by December 31, the member’s practice permit is automatically suspended by operation of law.

To protect and serve the public interest, the member’s name is published on the Institute’s website.

The member must not provide professional services or use protected words, titles, initials, and abbreviations.

The registrar may cancel the member’s practice permit in accordance with the Agrology Profession Act.

Any recommendation made by the Registration Committee may be appealed by two processes:

Reconsideration Review: Within 30 days of receiving a copy of a recommendation regarding an individual's application, designation, or recommended practice area(s), the individual may request a reconsideration review by giving the Registrar a written request for a review that sets out the reason(s) for the review. There is no charge for this review.

Formal Appeal:
In the event an individual is not satisfied with the reconsideration review outcome, the individual may request a formal appeal to the AIA Council within 30 days after being given a copy of the reconsideration review decision. The individual must provide the Registrar with a written request for a formal appeal that sets out the reason(s) for the appeal.
